Several progressive Democratic lawmakers are clamoring for Sen. Lindsey Graham to resign, Fox News reports, amid allegations that the South Carolina Republican improperly inquired about the possibility of tossing out certain ballots in Georgia.
Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), for example, claimed that Graham “attempted to commit voter fraud” following the allegations, which were brought forth by an aide to Brad Raffensperger, Georgia’s Republican secretary of State.
“He can’t get away with it,” Tlaib proclaimed, according to Fox. “This unethical and possibly illegal action from a sitting U.S. Senator demands a swift consequence.”
“I must be doing something right”
Democrats hoping that Graham will be on his way out of the Senate as a result of this supposed scandal should probably not hold their breaths.
According to the secretary of State’s staffer, Graham asked whether it would be legal to reject absentee ballots.
While such inquiries might strike many as a standard reaction to a contested state election, some Democrats nonetheless turned the incident into the basis for their latest campaign against the GOP senator.
In response to calls for him to step down in shame, however, Graham remained defiant.
“I must be doing something right with the most radical liberal politicians and media pundits in America are calling for my resignation,” he declared.
“Bizarre and ridiculous”
During an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity, Graham further clarified the situation: “I know what I talked to the secretary of State about, and it wasn’t for him to throw out ballots — that was beyond bizarre and ridiculous. I was talking about a system and how it works and to make sure we have confidence in it.”
Another official privy to the call between Graham and Raffensperger offered a different perspective to the staffer’s critical take.
“What I heard was a discussion about absentee ballots and if … there was a percentage of signatures that weren’t really, truly matching is there some point you get to, if someone could say…‘Let’s throw out all these ballots,’” the individual recalled, as Fox reported.
Once again, far-left Democrats appear to have taken an allegation devoid of critical context as their cue to screech for a Republican’s resignation.
