Despite a concerted effort among some Democrats to “draft” the former first lady, a recent poll found that roughly 1 in 3 members of the party believe Michelle Obama should not sign on as presumptive presidential nominee Joe Biden’s running mate, Breitbart reported Wednesday.
Although Biden has previously proclaimed that he would choose Obama to fill out the presidential ticket “in a heartbeat,” plenty of evidence indicates that she has no desire to seek the office.
Nevertheless, a group of political activists formed the “Committee to Draft Michelle Obama” earlier this year with the intention of pressuring her into considering the post, as Breitbart notes.
“Ms. Obama will not only benefit the Democratic ticket this November but also help lead this country to be more just and caring,” the group has said, according to The Hill.
“She doesn’t want the job”
According to the new CBS/YouGov survey, however, only about 65% of Democrats agree that Michelle Obama should run, even if she were interested.
Former Obama administration senior adviser Valerie Jarrett shared her thoughts on the matter last month, declaring that there is “no chance” the former first lady would accept such an offer, as The Hill noted.
“The reason why I’m being so unequivocal is that there just simply has never been a time when she’s expressed an interest in running for office,” Jarrett said. “She’s not demurring here. She’s not being hard to get. She doesn’t want the job.”
“She knows the way around”
Biden, on the other hand, made it clear that he would jump at the chance to campaign alongside Obama.
“She’s brilliant,” he said about a month ago, according to CBS Pittsburgh. “She knows the way around. She is a really fine woman. The Obamas are great friends.”
He seemed to see the writing on the wall, however, adding that he did not think “she has any desire to live near the White House again.”
Among the candidates regularly discussed as potential running mates, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) leads the pack of 12 individuals, with 36% of respondents saying Biden should pick her if he had to make a decision now, according to Breitbart.
If Michelle Obama is his top choice, though, it appears he is out of luck. Democrats are sure to rally around whichever candidate he ultimately picks, but GOP enthusiasm ahead of the 2020 election might mean Biden will be left with no surefire winning option.
