Democrats call for Ted Cruz to resign in wake of Capitol attack

Democrats were already furious with Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) for joining the group of Republicans vowing to object in Congress to the Electoral College vote naming Joe Biden president-elect — and that anger boiled over after a massive mob of President Donald Trump’s supporters attacked the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday.

Now, a number of Democrats are holding Cruz directly responsible for the chaos — and they’ve given notice that they want to see the senator’s resignation, Breitbart reports.

Time to go?

Leading the charge of the anti-Cruz brigade were two fellow Texans, Rep. Joaquin Castro (D) and his brother, Julian Castro, a former presidential candidate and Obama-era official. According to Breitbart, the brothers took to Twitter on Wednesday to demand that Cruz step down “immediately.”

In another message late Wednesday, Joaquin Castro urged lawmakers to ask for Cruz’s resignation on the Senate floor.

Speaking later with The Texas Tribune, the Texas congressman said Cruz had behaved “shamelessly,” as Breitbart noted.

“He has conducted himself shamelessly, and I think he has done this because he believes it’s the only way, the only chance that he has to win the Republican nomination for president,” Rep. Castro said.

Dems double down

Calls for Cruz to resign were echoed by Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, a Democrat who said Texans need to hold Cruz “accountable” for what had happened, according to the Tribune, as well as left-leaning Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo, who accused Cruz of having “fed the false narrative” about the election results and of having “fanned the flames of mistrust” that resulted in “outrageous” chaos.

Other Democrats, like former Texas Rep. Beto O’Rourke and Arizona Rep. Reuben Gallego, have labeled Sen. Cruz a “traitor” to the nation who helped foment “sedition” and an “attempted coup” against the government, Breitbart notes.

It all comes as Cruz has continued to denounce the attacks, saying in a tweet, “Violence is always unacceptable. Even when passions run high.”
