Democratic strategist Bob Beckel, original cast member of ‘The Five,’ dies at 73

Longtime fans of Fox News’ The Five were saddened to learn this week of the passing of one of its original cast members.

According to Fox News, Democratic strategist Bob Beckel, 73, has died.

Beckel, though he wasn’t popular politically with viewers of the hit panel show, was crucial in the show’s development and ultimate success, having joined it in 2011 as an original cast member. Beckel provided the liberal angle on the top stories of the day, which often erupted into entertaining — and sometimes fierce — debate among the rest of the conservative panelists.

Beckel’s longtime friend, columnist Cal Thomas, announced his passing on social media, writing, “My friend and spiritual brother, Bob Beckel, has passed into the presence of the Lord he loved. We did so many things together and I hope we modeled what two people of different political persuasions can be like when they love one another.”

Impressive career

In addition to his time influencing Democratic politics for decades, Beckel enjoyed a successful career across the mainstream media cable news industry.

Aside from multiple stints with Fox News stretching back to 2000, Beckel was one of the original members of The Five along with co-hosts Greg Gutfeld and Dana Perino, who still co-host the ultra-popular show to this day.

He briefly joined the ranks at CNN in 2015 before ultimately returning to the set of The Five. He left Fox News in 2017.

Most major Fox News hosts mentioned Beckel’s passing this week, including Laura Ingraham, who described Beckel as an “old-time liberal who you could fight with… but we always had a laugh afterward.”

Tributes pour in

Dana Perino, and numerous others that Beckel worked with throughout his television and political career, paid tribute to the veteran of the business.

“Very sad to hear Bob Beckel has passed. Sitting at the table with him was fun and he always asked me if I approved of his tie. RIP,” wrote Fox News contributor Katie Pavlich.
