We have seen corrupt politicians before, but this one is really special.
PA State Rep. Movita Johnson-Harrell, the first Muslim woman to serve in that role, has been charged with stealing $500,000 from a charity she created.
Johnson-Harrell, by all signs, only created this charity so she could live a better lifestyle. Prosecutors say that she diverted Medicaid and Social Security disability funds for her own benefit.
According to the charges, she allegedly ripped off her own charity so she could buy furs, go on fancy vacations, and fund her own campaign, among other things.
For instance, she allegedly spent $2,000 to make payments on her Porsche. She also allegedly used about $20,000 to pay for overdue mortgage payments and spent more than $15,000 on designer clothing.
Among the charges are perjury, campaign fraud, tax fraud, and tampering with public records.
The charity, Motivations Education & Consultation Associates, was created to provide support for people with intellectual disabilities, chronic mental illness, and substance abuse issues, along with the homeless, children, and elderly people.
A deal in the works?
PA Attorney General Josh Shapiro issued a statement announcing the charges: “When corruption erodes the trust that is built between governmental entities and citizens, no one wins.”
“I’ve said time and time again as attorney general that no one is above the law, no matter their position of power. And today is no different.”
Johnson-Harrell issued a statement denying some of the charges, but she also admitted that she had made some missteps. In addition to resigning her seat, she is also expected to plead guilty.
Hopefully, Shapiro does not bow down to political correctness here and sets an example.
The public put their trust in her in both the charity and electing her to office, so she truly needs to pay the price for this betrayal.
