To draw attention to the worsening situation at the southern border, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R), among others, has been transporting voluntary groups of newly arrived illegal migrants to so-called “sanctuary” cities run by Democrats, including Washington D.C.
Despite her prior proud proclamations of “sanctuary” status for illegal migrants, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) has repeatedly complained about what Abbott is doing and ludicrously insisted this week that her city lacks the resources to accommodate the migrants sent there from Texas, BizPacReview reported.
Incredibly, Bowser seemed to suggest that the nation’s extraordinarily wealthy capital city did not have the same capacity as small border towns in Texas to handle an influx of a few thousand migrants over several months — the same amount of migrants those overwhelmed small border towns see every few days.
She’s right about one thing — D.C. is “not Texas”
Mayor Bowser’s absurd comparison of D.C. with small Texas border towns occurred this week in reaction to Gov. Abbott sending two buses with around 100 migrants to the front gate of Vice President Kamala Harris’ D.C. residence at the Naval Observatory.
“We’re not a border town. We don’t have an infrastructure to handle this type of and level of immigration to our city,” Bowser told a local reporter. “But we will create a new normal here and have a humane welcome for people and an efficient service provision. But we don’t have the ability — we’re not Texas.”

Justifiable criticism and mockery
Fox News reported that Mayor Bowser was widely criticized and mocked for those comments on social media and the clearly hypocritical insinuation that it was somehow the sole responsibility of small border towns — and not large self-proclaimed “sanctuary” cities like her own — to provide care and essential services for newly arrived illegal migrants.
The pushback was perhaps summed up best in a tweet from conservative pundit Mark Hemingway, who wrote, “So Washington DC — population 700k — doesn’t have infrastructure to handle a few thousand immigrants because it’s not a ‘border town.'”
“Does the DC mayor think Del Rio, TX — population 35k — has the infrastructure to deal with 50k immigrants crossing the border EVERY MONTH?” he added.
Abbott reveals only around 8,000 migrants have been sent to D.C. since April
Gov. Abbott issued a press release Friday to provide an update on his Operation Lone Star efforts to address border security and immigration issues as well as some perspective on the stunning hypocrisy on display by Democratic officials like Mayor Bowser.
Since the operation began in March 2021, Texas has apprehended more than 304,000 illegal migrants and made nearly 20,000 criminal arrests, more than 17,000 of which were on felony charges. Meanwhile, since just April of this year, Texas has bused around 8,000 illegal migrants to D.C.
“The Biden-Harris Administration continues ignoring and denying the historic crisis at our southern border, which has endangered and overwhelmed Texas communities for almost two years,” Abbott said in a statement. “Our supposed Border Czar, Vice President Kamala Harris, has yet to even visit the border to see firsthand the impact of the open border policies she has helped implement, even going so far as to claim the border is ‘secure.'”
