As New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) faces the fallout of a sexual harassment scandal that’s been months in the making, his brother — CNN anchor Chris Cuomo — has decided he needs a vacation.
According to Breitbart, Chris Cuomo is taking a trip to the Hamptons just days after news broke that an investigation into claims his brother had acted inappropriately toward multiple women on his payroll had found evidence supporting the allegations. Gov. Cuomo is now facing calls to step down, including from many in his own party, as ABC News notes.
A yearly trip?
In the meantime, Chris Cuomo is claiming his absence was a planned one. “Every year I take my birthday week off,” he said on a podcast with fellow CNN host Don Lemon, according to The New York Times. “I’m looking forward to it.”
Chris Cuomo went on: “I’ll be right here at home because I don’t know why I’d go anywhere else than the East End of Long Island during the summer. It’s the most beautiful place in the world.”
The CNN anchor said he’d be fishing and “making memories with the kids” while away.
Or a convenient excuse?
While Chris Cuomo may try to claim otherwise, it seems all too convenient that his trip coincides with what may be the biggest PR battle of his brother’s political career. According to reports, New York Attorney General Letitia James (D) found no less than 11 “credible” claims of sexual harassment by Andrew Cuomo.
According to ABC, a report from James detailed “specific examples of the governor allegedly making suggestive comments and engaging in unwanted touching that 11 women — some named, others anonymous — found ‘deeply humiliating and offensive.'”
The report described the governor “running his hand across [one woman’s] stomach, from her belly button to her right hip, while she held a door open for him at an event,” ABC said. The report also accused him of “running his finger down her back, from the top of her neck down her spine to the middle of her back, saying ‘Hey, you,’ while she was standing in front of him in an elevator.”
“A very bright spotlight”
According to Breitbart, CNN hasn’t commented on Chris Cuomo’s absence from the network — but some of his colleagues aren’t going quite so easy on him.
CNN host Brian Stelter hasn’t held back his criticism of Chris Cuomo, writing in an op-ed for the network last week that his colleague’s role as both a journalist and confidante of his brother “raises serious questions about journalistic responsibilities and ethics,” something Stelter claimed was also detailed in James’ report.
“Chris surely has a lot to say about his brother. But for the time being he is staying silent: He did not mention the scandal on Cuomo Prime Time Tuesday night,” Stelter wrote, according to Breitbart.
“There’s no relationship quite like it in politics or media: A pair of brothers, one governing the fourth biggest state in the country, the other hosting one of the most prominent shows on cable TV,” the CNN star added in his op-ed. “Right now, both men are standing in a very bright spotlight.”
