Pressed on COVID deaths in nursing homes, Cuomo says ‘who cares’ where patients died

Though he championed himself as a life-saving government hero in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) has come under intense scrutiny this week after a bombshell report unveiled statistics that will likely haunt him for the rest of his career.

According to the Daily Wire, upon the emergence of a report from New York’s attorney general that coronavirus-related deaths in nursing homes in the state were underreported by as much as 50%, Cuomo blamed everyone under the sun and eventually said “who cares” about where the patients died.

“Who cares?”

In the wake of the bombshell report that claimed the state didn’t count COVID-related deaths in nursing home patients as such if the patient was transferred to a hospital and died there, Cuomo gave a press conference on Friday that probably hurt him more than if he would have ignored the report altogether.

A reporter at the press conference asked Cuomo what his message would be to those who lost family members in nursing homes and hospitals due to policies instituted by the governor that some say resulted in an uptick in death that could have, in theory, been avoided. “So the policy aside — who was right, who was wrong — just as a father, as a son, what would your message be to those families today?” the reporter asked.

Cuomo began his response by blaming the very bureaucracy he runs and then saying that everyone did the best they could in the face of an unprecedented problem. He went on to remind the reporter that elderly patients with comorbidities continue to perish as the virus continues to spread across the state, before adding that he doesn’t care where they die.

“But who cares?” Cuomo said, according to the Daily Wire. “3,328 died in a hospital, [others] died in a nursing home. They died,” he added, in what appeared to be an attempt to discount the report detailing how many more elderly residents of the state who were in nursing homes died when they were transferred to local hospitals.

The blame game

The New York governor went on to use the press conference to blame everyone but himself for the state’s exceedingly high death toll, which is at least in part due to patients who died after Cuomo signed an order last year requiring nursing homes to take in COVID-19 patients recently discharged from hospitals.

After blaming former President Donald Trump’s administration, Cuomo even took a shot at God for unleashing the virus in the first place.

“Why COVID? Why did God do this? I don’t know. I don’t know. But it was cruel. And it was terrible. And it still is,” Cuomo said, before adding that he is “blessed with faith,” as the Daily Wire reported.

Sadly, Cuomo likely won’t have to worry too much about shouldering any responsibility for what happened in his state under his watch; the Daily Wire reported separately that the majority of the mainstream media ran cover for him with the same aggressiveness that they did when the Hunter Biden scandal first emerged.

In the wake of New York Attorney General Letitia James releasing what should have been a career-ending report for Cuomo, ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, and MSNBC spent a total of 10 collective minutes covering the situation, with some popular mainstream news shows not covering it at all, the Daily Wire said.
