Of all the impeachment witnesses called by the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday, there was only one who was truly impartial.
While three witnesses were proven to have significant anti-Trump backgrounds, George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley — though himself a liberal — proved to be the voice of reason and flipped on Democrats for abusing their congressional power, Breitbart reported.
What not to do
Throughout his testimony, Turley consistently warned Democrats against impeaching a president just for the sake of doing it. He referred to the current effort as representative of the thinnest case that has ever been made to impeach a president.
Turley, at one point, compared this impeachment to that of President Andrew Johnson. This, by and large, is considered to be the standing example of what Congress should not do when they are trying to impeach a president.
When citizens look back, Johnson will be nothing but an afterthought when this sham is analyzed decades from now.
Abuse of power
Democrats have regularly cherry-picked things that Trump has said — statements often made in jest — to “prove” his abuse of power.
When Trump makes a joke, his words are too often taken literally, and Congress tries to hold him accountable. Their impeachment case, as Turley stated, is on the shakiest of grounds.
Honestly, Democrats would have a hard time getting the Senate to even censure the president, yet they are going to try to ask the Senate to actually remove the president.
The shining moment of Turley’s testimony came when he called out Congress for abusing their power. According to RealClearPolitics, he stated:
I can’t emphasize this enough, and I’ll say it just one more time. If you impeach a president, if you make a “high crime and misdemeanor” out of going to the courts, it is an abuse of power. It’s your abuse of power. You’re doing precisely what you’re criticizing the president for doing. We have a third branch that deals with conflicts of the other two branches. And what comes out of there and what you do with it is the very definition of legitimacy.
By the end of the day yesterday, even networks like CNN had to admit the Judiciary hearing wasn’t exactly a major win for Democrats. Several liberal pundits stated we would have to see what next week would bring before the House could even consider moving forward with impeachment.
Even with such harsh criticism, though, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday ordered Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) and his committee, to move forward and prepare articles of impeachment.
Instead of listening to reason, Democrats are hoping the American people will be moved by three clearly biased “experts,” all of whom have a history of working for Democrats and railing against Trump from the very beginning of his presidency.
