House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) continues to watch her slim congressional majority crumble before her eyes.
According to recent reports, U.S. Rep. Conor Lamb (D-PA) has decided that he is going to pursue a seat in the Senate instead of running for re-election in the House of Representatives.
“Falls flat in the upper chamber”
The announcement came on Friday when Lamb indicated that he would be running to replace Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA).
Toomey previously confirmed that he would retire at the end of the current term, prompting a host of Republican and Democratic candidates to throw their hats in the ring.
Explaining his decision, Lamb noted that he had “grown frustrated by House-passed legislation that falls flat in the upper chamber.”
He went on to signal his intention to “build on” his party’s majority in Congress so that President Joe Biden can more easily advance his agenda.
Of course, there is no guarantee that Lamb’s House seat will go to another Democrat, which means that the party could lose even more of his razor-thin majority. In his most recent campaign, he managed to win by a margin of fewer than 10,000 votes.
“Likely to retire or run for a different office”
Furthermore, the district he currently represents is being redrawn, likely making a Democratic candidate even more vulnerable.
For their part, the National Republican Congressional Committee confirmed the GOP is already eyeing the seat, putting Lamb on its “Exit List” along with members “likely to retire or run for a different office in 2022.”
As for the candidate himself, Lamb represents a unique combination of progressive and moderate beliefs.
For example, he has frequently criticized former President Donald Trump and his Republican base while advocating for the elimination of the Senate filibuster. At the same time, he has refrained from taking extreme positions on issues such as gun control, defunding police, or bans on hydraulic fracturing. He even went so far as to vote against Pelosi for the position of House speaker.
It remains unclear what Lamb’s chances of winning his Senate race will be, but it seems clear that Pelosi and other Democratic leaders in the House are growing increasingly worried about their dwindling political majority.
