For months, most in the mainstream media have covered nothing but negative angles when it comes to President Donald Trump’s handling of the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic that took the world by surprise and changed life as we knew it.
Now, however, it appears that even some of the most vocal Trump-haters are finding it difficult to maintain their negativity. According to the Daily Caller, CNN’s Jake Tapper was forced to confess this week that Trump’s oversight of the rapid development of a COVID-19 vaccine was an “unmitigated success.”
Tapper’s admission follows announcements of better-than-expected results on a coronavirus vaccine from biotech companies Moderna and Pfizer.
Credit where credit was due
On a Monday afternoon segment of Tapper’s show, The Lead, the CNN host gave Trump and his administration rare credit for overseeing Operation Warp Speed, a government program that assisted major drug companies by providing extra resources to procure a viable vaccine at a much faster rate.
“We should take a moment, as we always have when discussing vaccine and Operation Warp Speed, that this is, you know, putting aside all of the failures of the Trump administration when it comes to the coronavirus, and there are lots, this is an unmitigated success and we should acknowledge that,” Tapper said, according to the Daily Caller.
The journalist was discussing the developing situation with Dr. Sanjay Gupta, a neurosurgeon and CNN’s chief medical correspondent. The doctor nodded as Tapper issued the rare praise.
Tapper even noted that Operation Warp Speed funds were used in Moderna’s vaccine development. Pfizer only used the additional government funds for the manufacture and distribution of the vaccine, he said.
“And I just think it’s important that people working so hard…get credit for this and President Trump was the one who OK’d it,” Tapper said, as the Daily Caller reported.
Success on the vaccine front
Earlier this year, as the coronavirus pandemic began to worsen across the country and the world, many medical experts and media pundits scoffed at the notion that an effective vaccine would be ready in under two years.
According to the Associated Press, what was once touted as fantasy and political speak became a reality this week as Pfizer announced that its COVID-19 vaccine has proven 95% effective, updating previous impressive results that showed it was 90% effective.
Adding to the rousing success is news that the vaccine is especially effective in older patients who have serious cases of the virus, not to mention that it will be available for use within “days” under emergency-use authorizations granted on a case-by-case basis, for now.
While President Trump faced a number of uncertainties along with a lot of trial-and-error during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s refreshing to see that he’s receiving praise for a job well done from the most unexpected sources.
