CNN pundit accused of perpetuating racist stereotype in Thanksgiving tweet

A prominent political pundit is facing accusations of racism based on a tweet she posted this week.

Ana Navarro-Cardenas, a frequent fixture on CNN, appeared to suggest that all U.S. farmworkers are migrants from Central and South America.

“Thankful for the farm workers”

Although a Republican pundit, Navarro-Cardenas saw her popularity among progressives soar as she became an outspoken critic of former President Donald Trump.

She spent years calling out the ex-president for his perceived acts of bigotry, but now she is facing similar accusations on social media.

Her tweet on Thursday included a meme captioned with the phrase: “Thankful for the farm workers, who make it possible for us to celebrate.”

The attached images show a white family thanking Jesus for their meal and another featuring a migrant worker presumably named Jesus who replied: “De nada.”

“Zero chance this is accurate”

Plenty of apparently leftist Twitter users chimed in to echo her sentiment and express agreement, but there were also quite a few who slammed her for what they saw as a perpetuation of a false and racist stereotype.

“My local farmer is a middle-aged white dude who does all the planting and harvesting with his son, but I wouldn’t want to get in the way of your Thanksgiving Day racial stereotypes,” one critic wrote.

If the tweet had been a solitary incident, it might have avoided serious scrutiny. Prior reports, however, show that Navarro-Cardenas has a pattern of expressing views subsequently deemed to be bigoted. In March, she tweeted — and subsequently deleted — a post in which she celebrated receiving her COVID-19 vaccine in broken English.

“Me so vaccinated,” she wrote in an apparent riff on the 2 Live Crew song “Me So Horny.”

Perhaps more disturbing were the remarks she made disparaging certain pro-Trump Americans. In 2019, she reacted to a poll showing increased support for Trump among Blacks, tweeting: “Zero chance this is accurate. Zero. The poll must have only been conducted in the homes of Ben Carson, Kanye, that sheriff guy with the hat and those two Cubic Zirconia & Polyester-Spandex ladies.”
