CNN experiences massive drop in ratings without Trump in White House

Former President Donald Trump’s longstanding assertion that he was responsible for boosting the ratings of mainstream media outlets has apparently been proven correct.

Recent reports show that CNN’s viewership numbers have plummeted since Trump left the White House.

Numbers down across the board

In the weeks since Inauguration Day, CNN has reportedly shed nearly a million viewers per night on average.

Breaking down the results further, the network attracted roughly 2.5 million viewers during its prime-time programming each night between the November election and the end of Trump’s term in January, according to the Washington Free Beacon.

Since President Joe Biden was sworn in, however, that number has dropped to about 1.6 million.

The results are similar for daytime ratings. From Nov. 4 to Jan. 20, roughly 1.7 million people tuned in to CNN’s daytime programming — but that figure has dropped to about 1.1 million in the nearly two months since Biden has been in the White House, the Free Beacon notes.

Particularly important to CNN’s bottom line is the results among the 24–54 age group, which is highly targeted by advertisers. Following Biden’s inauguration, the network’s nighttime programs have seen a staggering 47% dropoff within the demographic, and daytime programs experienced a decline of about 44%.

“Going down the tubes”

A similar dip in cable news viewership was identified in a recent report by Variety Intelligence Platform.

Comparing the ratings of various programs during periods before and after the inauguration, the report found a clear dropoff — with CNN bearing the brunt of the loss.

Between March 1 and March 5, CNN primetime programs CNN Tonight with Don LemonAnderson Cooper 360, and Cuomo Prime Time experienced a roughly 30% drop compared to the period between Nov. 30 and Dec. 4. The report also found that MSNBC and Fox News experienced substantial dips in the ratings during the same span.

Early on in his term, Trump predicted that “all forms of media” would “tank” after he left office, adding that in his absence, “their ratings are going down the tubes,” as the Free Beacon reported.

Of course, it is impossible to determine all of the factors that might have contributed to the massive loss of viewers reported in recent weeks, but it certainly seems as though Trump’s forecast came to fruition.
