President Joe Biden stuck his neck out with calls for heightened gun control — and now, he’s being betrayed by his own supporters in the media who claim that he hasn’t gone far enough.
According to Breitbart, even CNN, long known for its left-leaning bias, has said Biden’s efforts to curb an alleged epidemic of gun violence “fall far short” of the mark. It makes for a sticky situation for a president who has been attempting to paint himself as a moderate poised to unite the country in the wake of Donald Trump’s tenure in the White House.
Of course, angering millions of gun owners would be quite the opposite of unity. But as Breitbart notes, even CNN isn’t happy with Biden’s take thus far.
In a report published Thursday, CNN’s Maeve Reston charged that “Biden…will harness the powers of the presidency to advance a half-dozen executive actions on gun control, but they fall far short of the ambitious goals he outlined as a presidential candidate as the real fight still looms on Capitol Hill.”
Reston goes on to complain about the “limited scope” of Biden’s latest gun control proposals, which include crackdowns on so-called “ghost guns” and a push for a national “red flag” law,” as the New York Post notes.
“No amendment…is absolute”
Biden, for his part, has claimed the measures are necessary to curb the “epidemic” of “gun violence in this country” that he likened to “an international embarrassment.”
“No amendment to the Constitution is absolute,” the president said this week, according to the Post.
“You can’t yell…‘fire’ in a crowded movie theater and call it freedom of speech,” he added, referencing a Supreme Court ruling that altered the interpretation of First Amendment protections.
“From the very beginning, you couldn’t own any weapon you wanted to own. From the very beginning that the Second Amendment existed, certain people weren’t allowed to have weapons,” Biden said, according to the Post. “So the idea is just bizarre to suggest that some of the things we’re recommending are contrary to the Constitution.”
A look ahead
While Biden has yet to sign any executive orders, the writing is on the wall: stricter gun control is coming, and soon.
Indeed, as Reuters notes, House Democrats have already pushed through a pair of measures designed to expand background check requirements for gun buyers.
Only time will tell if Republicans in Congress can scrounge up enough of a backbone to fight back against these and future attacks on Americans’ constitutional rights.
