CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin announces departure from network

Among the stiff competition within media punditry to be former President Donald Trump’s most outspoken critic, CNN senior legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin emerged to single-handedly grasp that mantle and try to milk it for all that it is worth.

He will have to find a new forum from which to showcase to the people his opposition to Trump, as Toobin’s plan to depart the network after 20 years was fully released to the public on Friday, Breitbart reported.

Toobin’s tenure at CNN was recently marred when he was pulled off the air with an eight-month suspension after he was caught masturbating on a Zoom call with colleagues from the New Yorker, which severed ties with the author and pundit who had written for the publication since 1993.

Toobin departing for a new venture

“Friends, I’ve decided that, after 20 years, I’m leaving @cnn after my vacation,” Toobin announced in a Friday afternoon tweet. “Was great to spend my last day on air with pals Wolf, Anderson and Don. Love all my former colleagues.”

“Watch for my next book, about the Oklahoma City bombing, coming in 2023 from @simonandschuster,” he added in a bit of self-promotion.

Tenure at CNN polished off with departure letter

Just prior to that tweet from Toobin, Variety published a report about his departure from CNN and shared excerpts from a letter Toobin had sent to his colleagues at the network to share the news of his imminent exit.

“I wanted to let you know that after twenty years I’ve decided to leave CNN after my vacation,” Toobin wrote. “It was great to spend my last day on air, like so many before, with my pals at Sit Room, AC360 and Don Lemon Tonight. It’s been a privilege (and fun) being your colleague.”

Variety noted that Toobin has been a fixture at CNN since 2002 as the network’s senior legal analyst, and highlighted the fact that the network has supported him “in good times and bad.”

Indeed, when Toobin was caught on camera masturbating in front of colleagues on a Zoom call in late 2020, it initially seemed like his career had been completely ruined, as the New Yorker cut ties with him and CNN placed him on indefinite leave. CNN allowed him to return in June 2021, however, at which time he vowed: “to be a better person off camera as well as on camera.”

So long to Toobin

It is unknown if Toobin’s contract with CNN had simply expired or if something else was happening behind the scenes, but the network told Variety in a brief statement, “We are grateful for Jeffrey’s contributions to the network over the years and wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”

Breitbart noted that social media erupted at the news of Toobin’s departure from CNN with countless posts using a hilarious assortment of euphemisms for masturbation to reference that scandal and poke fun at the Trump-hating author who had a hand in the downfall of his own career.
