Democrats tend to waste little time in the wake of high-profile mass shooting incidents to demand a debate on gun control measures restricting Second Amendment rights, but they often seem to remain utterly silent when the equivalent of a mass shooting, in terms of the toll of dead and wounded, takes place virtually every weekend in major urban centers.
That appears to be the case yet again as the city of Chicago saw five people shot dead and at least 23 others wounded by gunfire between Friday afternoon and Monday morning.
Five fatalities in four shootings
Chicago NBC affiliate WMAQ reported on the still-developing details of no fewer than 22 separate shooting incidents over the course of the weekend, four of which resulted in fatalities.
The first deadly shooting was a double homicide on Friday afternoon. A 37-year-old man and 29-year-old woman were hit with gunfire from an unknown assailant while in a vehicle, and both were pronounced dead after being transported to Mount Sinai Hospital.
Early Saturday morning, a 45-year-old man driving his car was hit multiple times by gunfire from someone on the sidewalk. The man crashed his vehicle into other parked cars and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The third fatal shooting incident involved a 46-year-old woman driving a car and who was similarly hit with gunfire from a shooter on a sidewalk. That driver was declared dead at a nearby hospital shortly thereafter on Sunday morning.
The fourth and final deadly shooting in Chicago over the weekend occurred on Sunday evening and involved a 41-year-old male victim who was killed while sitting on a sidewalk. The assailant was gunman who simply approached him and opened fire. That suspected gunman was in fact taken into police custody, a rarity for the majority of shootings that occur in Chicago.
Wounded range in age from 13 to 62
Of the several non-fatal shooting incidents that also transpired over the weekend in Chicago, it appears the youngest victim was a 13-year-old girl who was hit in the shoulder by gunfire while in her own bedroom in the early morning hours of Saturday.
On the other end of the spectrum, the oldest shooting victim of the gunfire-filled weekend was a 62-year-old man who was shot at least twice while standing in front of a residence on Saturday evening by a man who approached him and opened fire for unknown reasons.
While some of the shooting events appear to have been robberies that resulted in gunfire, others appear to have happened at random or for some unknown motive, though logic suggests that at least a portion of the shootings were drug- and gang-related.
Predictable silence from the left
The numbers of dead and wounded in Chicago, as well as other major Democrat-run cities, every single weekend are just as horrific and tragic as the toll of casualties inflicted in highly-publicized and politicized mass shooting events. Yet, save for local media coverage, the tallies are largely ignored by Democrats and their allies in the national media.
Until liberals and the media confront the weekly carnage in their own cities with the same sort of fervor displayed after high-profile mass shootings — and realize that access to guns, especially in strict gun control locales like Chicago, is not the real problem — they simply have no credibility to try and infringe upon the gun rights of law-abiding Americans who don’t live in major cities and have no involvement in the almost daily bloodshed taking place there.
