Biden’s DHS assigns former Sec. Michael Chertoff to lead review of embattled Disinformation Board

President Joe Biden’s Department of Homeland Security announced a “pause” earlier this week on its Disinformation Governance Board, which critics have decried as an Orwellian “Ministry of Truth,” and that the board’s initial director, Nina Jankowicz, herself criticized as a highly partisan purveyor of disinformation, had resigned.

Unfortunately, it has now been revealed that the Disinformation Board has not been disbanded and two arguably even worse new leaders have been picked to replace Jankowicz, the Daily Caller reported.

Those two replacements are former DHS Sec. Michael Chertoff, who co-authored the PATRIOT Act, and former U.S. Deputy Attorney General Jamie Gorelick, who served under former President Bill Clinton and was rumored to be a top choice in a prospective Hillary Clinton administration.

The new boss is worse than the old boss

According to a DHS statement Wednesday, as shared by Washington Free Beacon reporter Chuck Ross, Chertoff and Gorelick have been tasked to “lead a thorough review and assessment” of the Disinformation Board by way of their positions on the “bipartisan Homeland Security Advisory Council.”

The statement revealed two goals of that review — how best to combat disinformation without violating free speech and civil rights, as well as how to be more transparent with the public about the work conducted by the Disinformation Board.

As for the intense criticism that led to the “pause,” the DHS statement asserted that the board had been “grossly and intentionally mischaracterized” and insisted that it was “never about censorship or policing speech in any manner.”

The council review led by Chertoff and Gorelick has 75 days to issue an assessment and recommendations, and the board will reportedly not meet or do any work during that time.

Chertoff has spread disinformation of his own

There is a bit of a problem with Chertoff being assigned to conduct a review of the Disinformation Board, according to the Free Beacon, given that Chertoff himself has engaged in spreading disinformation to the American public.

Chertoff, like so many others in the D.C. establishment, had falsely dismissed the initial accounts in 2020 about Hunter Biden’s laptop as being completely manufactured “Russian disinformation.”

He had denied the true provenance of the matter — Biden had abandoned the laptop at a Delaware repair shop and never retrieved it — and cast aspersions on those who had brought the matter to light, namely former New York City Mayor Rudy Guiliani and the New York Post.

“But it looks like the evidence that’s emerging shows that these purported documents were circulating by the Russians in Ukraine for some period of time,” Chertoff erroneously claimed. “This suggests that this information is not only online but it’s an old-fashioned spy story involving human intelligence sources.”

The Free Beacon noted that no evidence has ever been put forward linking Biden’s laptop to Russia, documents found on the device have been independently verified as accurate and legitimate, and Hunter Biden himself is confirmed to be subject to a federal investigation in regard to his foreign business dealings and tax problems.
