Rep. Liz Cheney’s (R-WY) future in Republican politics was already on shaky ground, but a recent bombshell revelation might be the final nail in her political coffin.
According to Breitbart, a stunning new report from The New Yorker revealed that the staunchly anti-Trump Wyoming Republican teamed up with The Washington Post in early January to unleash what was described as “unprecedented” political sabotage against former President Donald Trump.
You might remember a breaking news-level story published earlier this year by The Washington Post in the form of a jointly-written op-ed by 10 former U.S. defense secretaries, including Dick Cheney, Robert Gates, Leon Panetta, and Ashton Carter, among others.
The op-ed was essentially a subtle hit-piece against the then-president. The secretaries explained that in their opinion, politicizing the U.S. military by deploying them to handle election disputes was a terrible idea.
“Our elections have occurred. Recounts and audits have been conducted. Appropriate challenges have been addressed by the courts. Governors have certified the results. And the electoral college has voted. The time for questioning the results has passed; the time for the formal counting of the electoral college votes, as prescribed in the Constitution and statute, has arrived,” the group wrote at the time.
The political hit-piece came at a time when the post-2020 election fallout was at its peak, as the then-president continued to insist that the 2020 election was stolen from him. It was also merely three days before Congress would convene to certify the Electoral College votes for each state, which turned into a day of violence at the U.S. Capitol.
The op-ed was published prior to Congress’ vote to impeach Trump for a second time.
What was Liz Cheney’s involvement?
Now, Eric Edelman, former national security adviser to former Vice President Dick Cheney, has revealed that it was Liz Cheney who rounded up the former defense secretaries and asked them to publish the op-ed, reportedly because she was worried about Trump’s actions.
“Edelman revealed that Cheney herself secretly orchestrated an unprecedented op-ed in the Washington Post by all ten living former Defense Secretaries, including her father, warning against Trump’s efforts to politicize the military,” The New Yorker report said.
“She was the one who generated it, because she was so worried about what Trump might do. It speaks to the degree that she was concerned about the threat to our democracy that Trump represented,” Edelman said, according to The New Yorker.
Cheney would go on to be one of a handful of House Republicans to vote in favor of impeaching the former president in the days after the Jan. 6 Capitol riots.
The revelation that Liz Cheney was responsible for the orchestration of the op-ed written by the former defense secretaries further proves that she’s had it in for Trump for some time, which is part of the reason why she’ll likely soon be ousted from her top GOP House leadership position.
