Charlotte Rae from ‘The Facts of Life’ has died at age 92

Anyone who grew up in the 1970s and ‘80s will be sad to know one of their favorite TV characters has passed away.

Charlotte Rae, who played Mrs. Garrett in both The Facts of Life and Diff’rent Strokes, has died at the age of 92.

Long Career

Rae began her career well before she portrayed Mrs. Garett.

To pay the bills during her early career, Rae did satirical sketches in Greenwich Village clubs.

Those gigs would lead to her being discovered by some Broadway producers.

Soon after, she was performing in Three Wishes for Jamie and Li’l Abner.

By 1961, she had landed a semi-regular role on Car 54, Where Are You?

She continued to do plays on Broadway, and even received two Tony nominations in the late ‘60s.

Then, in 1978, she brought the character of Mrs. Garrett to life.

Her impact on her fellow actors in that show was very apparent, as there was an outpouring of affection on social media by her former castmates on both shows.

Never Stopped

But her career went on after The Facts of Life.

She continued to be active in stage acting, and had roles in shows for several more decades, including in Leading Ladies in 2005.

She continued making movies and TV shows through 2015, appearing in Ricki and the Flash in 2015 and Girl Meets World in 2014.
