Rep. Biggs asks CDC if Pelosi consulted with agency before extending mask mandate

It was in mid-May that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued new guidance stating that it was not necessary for vaccinated individuals to wear masks or socially distance while indoors.

Yet, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has left her own mask mandate in place for House members and staffers, prompting House Freedom Caucus chair Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) to ask the CDC director if Pelosi had consulted the agency prior to extending the mandate, Breitbart reported.

Did Pelosi consult with CDC?

In a letter sent Thursday to CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky, Biggs said he was in search of “a simple answer to a simple question.”

“Did the Speaker of the House, or the Attending Physician of the House, consult with you, or anyone else at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), prior to her decision on May 14, 2021, to extend the mask mandate and social distancing protocols on the House floor?” the Arizona congressman asked.

Biggs pointed out that the CDC’s new guidance on masking had been issued just one day prior, May 13, and reminded Walensky that, “In your own words, ‘If you are fully vaccinated, you are protected, and you can start doing the things that you stopped doing because of the pandemic.'”

However, he also highlighted how Walensky, during a House Appropriations subcommittee hearing on May 26, had “repeatedly refused to directly answer” questions from his colleague, Rep. Andy Harris (R-MD), with regard to whether Pelosi or the Attending Physician had consulted with the CDC before extending the House mask mandate.

“Purely playing politics?”

Biggs further noted in his letter to Walensky that violations of the House mask mandate can result in fines for members and staffers ranging from $500 to $2,500, “even if a member has been vaccinated and is simply following the guidance of the agency you lead — the CDC.”

Biggs told The Daily Caller, “While Speaker Pelosi insists we follow the science and CDC guidelines, she continues running the House as if she is unaware of the science. So our ask is simple, has Pelosi consulted with the CDC or is she purely playing politics?”

The Daily Caller reached out to Pelosi’s office with the same question posed by Biggs — had her office consulted with the CDC first before extending the mask mandate — and received a rather terse reply: that the “Office of Attending Physician has repeatedly.”

Pelosi seen maskless at White House

Prior to the letter being sent to the CDC director, Fox News reported last week that according to Pelosi’s office and Attending Physician Dr. Brian Monahan, the House mask mandate would remain in effect until every single member and staffer had been vaccinated — a figure that was estimated to be around 75% at that time.

Fox also noted that while Pelosi’s strict mandate remained in place, the White House had actually followed the CDC guidance and lifted its own mask mandate for vaccinated individuals — and that Pelosi was seen maskless at a White House event mingling with and even hugging other maskless individuals.

That instance was described as the “definition of hypocrisy” by Rep. Mark Green (R-TN), who was recently hit with a fine for taking his mask off on the House floor in a display of defiance against Pelosi’s continued enforcement of the mandate, which he further described as “just harassment, basically.”
