Dr. Carson casts doubts on Biden’s mental fitness, suggests he and other leaders submit to regular ‘mental status tests’

A majority of Americans have serious doubts about President Joe Biden’s cognitive capabilities and mental fitness, and that number appears to include former Housing and Urban Development Sec. Dr. Ben Carson, the renowned former neurosurgeon and GOP presidential candidate.

In a recent interview, Dr. Carson pointed to the seemingly unending series of verbal gaffes and miscues from President Biden as evidence of his diminished mental capacity, the Daily Caller reported.

Carson calls for “mental status tests” on Biden, other top U.S. leaders

“Well, certainly you want someone in that office who’s a peak performer, not someone whose staff has to constantly come behind him and clean up what he’s been saying,” Carson told the Daily Caller of the current president. “Someone who can complete a sentence without a teleprompter would be helpful, as well.”

“You’re talking about somebody who has the nuclear codes, who has so many things that are important to Americans in his hands,” the former surgeon continued.

Carson balked at issuing a formal diagnosis of what he believed might be wrong with Biden but did signal his support for regular mental health checkups for not just the president but also all politicians and government officials in important leadership positions.

“I don’t want to make a diagnosis on him but we really should be in a place as a nation where we’re willing to do mental status tests on our leaders, particularly our president, on an annual basis,” he said. “And if they can’t pass that mental status test, action needs to be taken.”

Polling finds most Americans doubt Biden’s mental fitness

Dr. Carson is not alone in this line of thinking, as the Daily Caller pointed to a recent poll by Harvard/Harris that showed a solid majority of Americans have doubts about President Biden’s mental fitness and capacity to serve in office.

That survey of 1,963 registered voters between May 18-19 contained a host of bad news for Biden, but perhaps none more so than that of his mental health. Of those polled, 47 percent believed Biden was mentally fit to be president while 53 percent had doubts about his mental capacity to serve.

The 53 percent with doubts included 83 percent of Republicans, 61 percent of independents and unaffiliated voters, and even 19 percent of Democrats.

Nor is this a particularly new development, as a Politico/Morning Consult poll in November 2021 of 1,998 registered voters found that 48 percent believed Biden was not mentally fit to be president while 46 percent believed that he was — a huge shift from a prior October 2020 survey from the same pollsters that had found a 21-point margin in favor of Biden being mentally fit and capable to serve.

Sends a bad message to the world

While many Americans have joked about President Biden’s increasingly apparent mental decline, Dr. Carson told the Daily Caller that he worried about how that perception plays out on the global stage, and said, “It sends a message that now is the time to take advantage of the United States while we have weakened leadership. Recognize the position of the United States and the world.”

He noted that it was the rise of a strong America with strong leaders that significantly reduced the antics of tyrannical despots imposing power around the world, and added, “However, now that we’re starting to lose strength, you’re starting to see the despotic leaders rise again and so it is important not only to our country but to the world that we have strong, effective leadership.”
