After accepting Trump’s offer to run the Department of Housing and Urban Development, Ben Carson found himself in the headlines for all the wrong reasons.
During the redecoration process of his office, Carson reportedly ordered a dining room set with a price tag of $31,000, then blamed his wife for trying to make the purchase.
During his recent testimony about the attempted purchase, Carson stated, “When I assumed the position I was told that, traditionally, secretaries redecorate their offices … at any rate, I invited my wife to come help me.”
Ben Carson’s Weak Explanation
Carson went on a lengthy explanation as to why the dining set needed to be replaced.
He further stated that he basically took himself out of the equation.
Carson hinted the catalogs he was given were more at fault that he was, as “the prices were beyond what I wanted to pay and I made it clear that just didn’t seem right to me.”
Carson Appalled at Pricing
Mr. Carson insisted furnishings were the last thing he was honestly worried about.
He also insisted that once he found out how much the furnishings were going to cost, he initiated cancelling the order.
Follow the Rules Mr. Carson
As the department head, it is Mr. Carson’s job to make sure all guideless are followed, not to pass the buck.
In this case, regulations require any purchase of $5,000 or more have congressional approval.
He cannot claim ignorance for this and should have known that before even asking anyone to help him, let alone his wife.
Carson Got Himself in More Trouble
Carson’s unchivalrous behavior of blaming his wife may have actually landed him in even more hot water.
As The Hill reported, Carson’s department is now being investigated for his family’s involvement in the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
During the presidential election, Carson promoted himself as an outsider candidate, just like Donald Trump, and not being part of the DC Swamp.
We can only hope his recent behavior is an aberration and that Carson has not been infected by the disease that is already running rampant in DC.
