Watergate journalist Carl Bernstein says McConnell, GOP should push Trump out

Journalist Carl Bernstein is best known for his role covering President Richard Nixon and the Watergate scandal. Now, it looks like the reporter has President Donald Trump on his radar.

According to Breitbart, Bernstein told Chris Cuomo on CNN’s Cuomo Prime Time on Tuesday that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and other Republicans should force Trump to tender his resignation.

“We are in need of action by the political system and Republicans on Capitol Hill, including the craven Mitch McConnell,” Bernstein said, according to Breitbart. “Mitch McConnell understands that this president is not capable of being a fit president of the United States.”

Trump and Nixon

Bernstein drew from his history as an investigative journalist to make the case that the GOP needs to stand against Trump.

“What happened in the Nixon presidency? A group of Republicans led by the great conservative Barry Goldwater and by the minority leader of the House and by the Republican leadership marched to the White House and said to Richard Nixon, you are unfit to remain in office, you must leave the presidency, and we will no longer support you,” Bernstein told Cuomo, according to Breitbart.

He added: “Something similar has got to happen in some kind of conscience rendering by Republicans to save us and to save lives in this country.”

“A national emergency”

Bernstein’s comments came in light of Trump’s ongoing response to the coronavirus pandemic. The disease has infected some 4.8 million Americans and left over 158,000 others dead as of Wednesday, according to The New York Times.

Of course, Bernstein failed to note that Trump and his coronavirus task force have been focused from the start on slowing the spread of COVID-19 in the U.S., and the president himself has often touted his early ban on travel from China and later, the U.K.

Dr. Anthony Fauci recently said that those moves saved lives, according to Fox News. But that wasn’t enough for Bernstein.

“I think we have to recognize that we have a national emergency unlike anything in our history,” he told Cuomo, as Breitbart reported. “That national emergency is that we have a president of the United States who is demonstrably unfit, incompetent, not honest, and not capable of dealing with this horrible situation.”

Bernstein also alleged in his Tuesday interview that “people are dead because of [Trump’s] recklessness.” But it seems either the journalist doesn’t know the facts — or he simply doesn’t care.

On the flip side, it’s hard to say how Joe Biden, hiding in his basement, would have handled the situation — but given that Democrats are still criticizing Trump’s travel bans, it’s safe to say it wouldn’t have been pretty.
