California’s Newsom signs bill requiring stores to create ‘gender neutral’ toy sections

More woke craziness is on the way to the Golden State.

The Daily Mail reports that Democrat California Gov. Gavin Newsom just signed into law a bill that requires stores to label a select number of children’s toys as “gender neutral.”

All the details

According to Breitbart, A.B. 1084 was authored by Democrat state lawmaker Evan Low. The bill reportedly requires retail department stores to “maintain a gender neutral section or area…in which a reasonable selection of the items and toys for children that it sells shall be displayed, regardless of whether they have been traditionally marketed for either girls or for boys.”

To be clear, the Democrat-backed bill doesn’t require the stores to eliminate the traditional toy sections; it just requires them to add a “gender neutral” aisle or two.

Still, in the eyes of many, it’s just the latest empty gesture from a party struggling to stay relevant as midterm elections fast approach — and President Joe Biden’s agenda continues to get pushed to the back burner in Washington.

Notably, the bill only applies to toys and teething products, not clothes.

According to Breitbart, the bill covers “retail department stores that are physically located in California that have a total of 500 or more employees across all California retail department store locations.”

Looking ahead

Similar bills were proposed but failed to pass in the California state legislature in 2019 and 2020.

Low, the bill’s author, claims that his inspiration for the bill was the 10-year-old daughter of one of his staff members, who apparently had asked her mom why certain items were “off limits” because she was a girl, according to the Daily Mail.

“Part of it is to make sure if you’re a young girl that you can find a police car, fire truck, a periodic table or a dinosaur,” the Democrat told local reporters, according to Breitbart. “And then similarly, if you’re a boy, if you’re more artistic and want to play with glitter, why not? Why should you feel the stigma of saying, ‘Oh, this should be shamed’ and going to a different location?”

California Republicans, on the other hand, argue that the government shouldn’t be getting involved in the marketing of toys for children.

Stores now have until Jan. 1, 2024, to comply with the law. Establishments that don’t will be hit with a $250 fine for the first violation and a $500 fine for subsequent violations, Breitbart said.
