British Royal Marines seize Iranian oil tanker

Iran and Syria thought they would be able to pull the wool over the United States’ and Britain’s eyes, but the British Royal Marines just ruined their day.

As an Iranian oil tanker was headed to Syria to drop off its load, it was seized by the British Marines as a violation of current US and EU sanctions.

Not on Our Watch

Right now, President Trump’s main weapon against Iran and Syria has been sanctions.

Rather than initiating a military conflict that would cause loss of life, Trump and our allies have imposed sanctions that are meant to cripple the Iranian and Syrian economies to bring them back to the negotiating table.

Obviously, oil plays a large role in the success of the Iranian economy. Losing this tanker is going to be a crippling blow to Iran, but it may hurt Syria even more.

Gibraltar Chief Minister Fabian Picardo stated, “That refinery is the property of an entity that is subject to European Union sanctions against Syria.”

“With my consent, our port and law enforcement agencies sought the assistance of the Royal Marines in carrying out this operation.”

The British Marines carried out a flawless assault against the vessel. According to reports, the Marines boarded the ship by descending upon it from helicopters as well as speedboats.

Syrian Fuel Shortage

This tanker would have benefitted Iran financially, but it would have also helped the fuel shortage that is taking place in Syria right now.

Syria has been having fuel problems since the end of last year. In October, Iran was forced to put a hold on Syria’s credit for fuel.

Due to U.S. sanctions against Iran, the country had no choice but to do so, leaving Syria with few options. As a result, the Syrian government was forced to put fuel rationing policies in place.

Syrians struggled to keep their homes warm this past winter, so supplies must be running extremely low at this point. While it is taking time, Trump’s sanctions are clearly working.
