Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden erroneously claimed the endorsement of one of the most powerful labor unions in Pennsylvania. Now, he’s paying for it.
Pennsylvania’s Boilermakers Local 154 made it clear that it has in no way endorsed Biden for president, according to The Washington Free Beacon.
“Moment of disbelief”
Boilermakers’ trustee Shawn Steffee said Biden’s campaign never even contacted the group and said they were shocked to hear he claimed to have their support.
“We had a moment of disbelief when our members started blowing our phone up because they said we flip-flopped on our endorsement,” Steffee said. “Nobody from his staff — nobody — has ever spoken with us, so I don’t know where he’s coming up with that.”
Biden made the false claim at the ABC News town hall for the candidate on Thursday, Fox News reported.
“I’m telling the Boilermakers overwhelmingly endorse me, OK, so the Boilermakers Union has endorsed me because I sat down with them and went into great detail earlier to show their leadership exactly what I would do, number one,” Biden said.
The key issue
The Pennsylvania union actually endorsed President Donald Trump back in September.
The president has made it clear that he is pro-fracking, telling an audience at a rally in Pennsylvania on Tuesday, “with me, you’re going to frack,” Fox Business reported.
Biden, however, once said he “would make sure it’s eliminated.” Later he said he would only oppose new fracking on federal land. Biden’s running mate for vice president, Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA), claimed during the vice presidential debate that, “Joe Biden will not ban fracking. That is a fact.”
Trump has embraced fracking
Steffee told the Free Beacon that fracking is the main reason the group came out for Trump.
“[Biden] said ‘I will do away with fracking,’ then it was just fracking on federal land, so I don’t know what his story is,” he said. “But I do know President Donald Trump has embraced our energy independence and wants to grow the infrastructure on energy — and the Boilermakers absolutely want to be a part of it.”
Biden’s gaffes and forgetfulness are one thing, but falsely claiming to have endorsement of a union in a key swing state is unacceptable.
