President Joe Biden’s recent attempt to make a point about himself went embarrassingly wrong.
The Daily Caller reports that, after claiming not to be “stupid,” Biden proceeded to mix-up his wife’s father and grandfather.
What happened:
The White House this week has held a series of St. Patrick’s Day-related events. One of them was the Annual Friends of Ireland Luncheon, which was held on Thursday, St. Patrick’s Day. It was at this event that Biden’s latest gaffe took place.
Speaking to those in attendance, Biden said, “I just want you to know, I may be Irish, but I’m not stupid.”
Biden, however, immediately put his foot in his mouth, adding, “I married Domenic Giacoppo’s daughter.”
According to Forbes, Biden married Domenic Giacoppo’s grandaughter, First Lady Jill Biden. Giacoppo’s daughter was the First Lady’s mother, Bonny Jean Jacobs.
What marrying Giacoppo’s daughter or granddaughter has to do with one’s intelligence is another question altogether. Forbes reports that Giacoppo’s family left Gesso, a tiny village in Sicily, Italy, for the United States in 1900. Giacoppo was two-years-old at the time.
Add it to the gaffe list
President Biden’s four-decade career in government is littered with gaffes. But, some are now arguing that Biden has gotten worse with his old age.
Rep. Ronny Jackson (R-TX), the former White House physician for the Obama and Trump administrations, for example, has said:
[Biden has] got 40 years of tape, you can go back and look at this man, so it’s not like we don’t have anything to compare it to. You can go back and look. He’s always made gaffes. He’s always made missteps, but never like this.
Accordingly, Jackson and others have been calling for Biden to undergo a cognitive test, as former President Donald Trump did after the left questioned Trump’s mental fitness. Biden, however, has refused to do so.
This has only led more people to question whether Biden has the mental capacity to lead the country. A recent poll, for example, found that only 40% of Americans believe that Biden has the mental sharpness necessary to lead the country. That’s opposed to 54% who said that he does not.
The White House has altogether refused to address the issue of Biden’s mental fitness.
