Former Vice President Joe Biden officially threw his hat in the presidential ring last week. One of his first stops on the campaign trail was an appearance on ABC’s The View on Friday.
During his appearance on the program, Biden made the astonishing claim that there wasn’t even a “whisper of a scandal” during the eight years of former President Barack Obama’s tenure in office, a ludicrous assertion that accidentally ended up backfiring on the former VP.
“Not one single whisper of scandal”
The Independent Journal Review reported that Biden’s remark came in response to a question about his personal relationship with Obama, to which Biden eventually replied that he was proud of the fact that there was “not one single whisper of scandal” when they served together.
Needless to say, there were quite a few conservatives — virtually everyone who was paying attention between 2009-2016 — who disagreed with Biden’s assessment.
The American people disagree
IJR compiled a series of Twitter posts from people who took issue with Biden’s “no scandals” assertion, many of whom created lists of their own to illustrate the prominent scandals known to have occurred on Obama’s watch.
Another commenter on Facebook put together a stunning list of 50 distinct scandals during Obama’s tenure.
Too many scandals to count
The most recent, and still unfolding, scandal of the Obama years was the administration’s spying on the 2016 campaign of then-candidate Donald Trump, a deliberate effort to prevent him from winning the election which ultimately morphed into an elaborate plot to remove him from office.
The scandalous surveillance of the Trump campaign came in the wake of revelations that Obama’s NSA had in fact been spying on countless Americans, that his CIA had spied on Congress, and that the administration also spied on a number of reporters and media outlets.
Another notable scandal of the Obama era involved former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her private email server, an arrangement which was only discovered by virtue of the investigation into the Obama administration’s scandalous cover-up of the 2012 Benghazi terrorist attack that claimed four American lives.
Then there was the Veterans Affairs scandal, the targeting of conservative Americans by the IRS, the Iran nuclear deal, Obama’s lies about the Affordable Care Act, the swapping of Taliban prisoners for traitor Bowe Bergdahl, Operation Fast and Furious gun-running to Mexican cartels, the downplaying of radical Islamic terrorism and Islamic State group, and on and on.
The obvious conclusion is that there were plenty of scandals that took place during the Obama years, arguably far more than can be listed in this space.
Perhaps Biden never heard a “whisper” of scandal because the liberal mainstream media ignored most of them, but he should know that center and right-leaning Americans have been talking about Obama-era scandals for years. He’d be wise to take that into consideration before uttering such a provably false claim in the future.
