On the campaign trail, then-candidate Joe Biden promised Americans that he would begin to do away with the nasty, partisan divide in Washington, D.C., which is arguably the worst it has been in modern U.S. history.
However, that promise didn’t seem to hold up when the Biden administration asked Sharon Gustafson, the general counsel of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), to resign last week. Gustafson refused, which prompted the Biden administration to drop the hammer and send her packing, according to The Hill.
Trump holdover fired
Gustafson, who was appointed by former President Donald Trump, had written a respectfully-worded letter to the Biden administration indicating that she refused to resign from her position as a lawyer for the EEOC. According to reports, she was notified shortly after that she had been fired, effective as of the close of business last Friday.
Gustafson made a case in the letter, which was released by the Ethics and Public Policy Center, that she only wished to serve out the remainder of her appointed term — nothing more and nothing less. But that was too much of an ask for Biden’s White House, apparently.
The sudden firing prompted outrage from Republicans, who claimed that firing Gustafson from the independent agency was clearly not in line with the “unity” that Biden promised the country leading up to the 2020 election. One of Gustafson’s former colleagues came out swinging on Twitter.
“I find the action taken today by the White House against our independent agency to be deeply troubling, a break from long-established norms respected by presidents of both parties, an injection of partisanship where it had been absent, and telling evidence of what ‘unity’ actually means to this President and his Administration,” Andrea Lucas, a Republican-appointed commissioner to the EEOC, said, according to The Hill.
As The Daily Wire reported, Gustafson’s work was already being scrutinized by Biden’s White House in the weeks prior to her firing, especially as she focused on religious discrimination claims, a move that apparently triggered more than one LGBT rights organization.
Her firing prompted Gustafson to question whether or not the Biden administration will use her former agency for some of the issues that it routinely tackles, such as the aforementioned focus on religious discrimination.
She went as far as labeling the protection from religious discrimination a “disfavored right,” especially as compared to the focus on LGBT issues and other left-leaning agenda points.
That was also made evident when, in the weeks leading up to the end of Gustafson’s employment, a recent report on religious discrimination was scrubbed from the EEOC’s website, along with a podcast led by Gustafson on the agency’s findings.
“Do I have concerns about whether going forward the EEOC will fail to keep in mind that those are on an even footing? Yes, I have concerns about that,” Gustafson told The Daily Wire in a recent interview.
This is just proof positive that the Biden administration is bent on taking everything to the most progressive, radical level possible, while purposely ignoring other equally important issues that don’t fit into their agenda.
