Biden diverts military funding for border wall to repair ‘environmental damage’ from the project

If you were under the impression that President Joe Biden couldn’t possibly botch the situation at the southern U.S. border any more than he already has, unfortunately, you were mistaken.

Biden has now not only canceled U.S. military funds set aside for construction projects related to the border wall, but will divert those canceled funds to repair “environmental damage” from the border wall construction project, The Hill reported.

What’s going on?

Former President Trump, who used funds set aside for various military-related projects for the border wall, managed to secure $1.4 billion for the border wall project using that strategy.

But in keeping with the White House’s goal to undo everything Trump did to control illegal immigration, the White House announced its plans to divert the $1.4 billion back to military-related programs and environmental projects.

“Consistent with the President’s Proclamation terminating the redirection of funds for border wall, no more money will be diverted from other purposes to building a border wall,” a Biden administration official said.

“Today, the Department of Defense will begin cancelling all wall projects using the diverted funds, and will take steps to return remaining unobligated military construction funds to their appropriated purpose as permitted by law,” the official added.

While a review of where the funds would be best used is currently underway by the Biden administration and the U.S. Department of Defense, a DOD spokesperson said part of the funds will likely go toward “schools for military children, overseas military construction projects in partner nations, and the National Guard and Reserve equipment account.”

Democrats praise the move

According to a number of high-profile Republicans, Biden’s cancellation of the border wall funds could be illegal. As a matter of fact, that determination will soon be revealed in a report to be issued by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) as they work to determine if the pausing of the funds violates the Impoundment Control Act.

Democrats are praising the move — especially the allocation of funds to repair what they claim is environmental damage from the border wall sections that were erected under the Trump administration.

“President Biden promised to not build one more foot of border wall under his watch, and I welcome this step by his Administration to begin repairing the damage caused by border wall construction,” Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-AZ) said of the announcement.

Grijalva said the border wall only served to “destroy precious environmental habitats,” adding that he believes it also desecrated “Native American sacred sites.”

Only time will tell what the Biden administration and his DOD will ultimately use the funding for, but it’s highly doubtful any of it will go toward actually combating the out-of-control influx of illegal immigration, which should be priority number one.
