With their incessant insistence on masks, high-profile Democrats including President Joe Biden are continuing to send mixed messages about officials’ confidence in the COVID-19 vaccines currently available to the public — and now, reporters are calling them out on it.
According to the New York Post, Biden snapped at a journalist Friday who had asked the president why he continues to wear a mask despite him — and nearly everyone around him — being vaccinated against the coronavirus.
Moments later, Biden relented, claiming his response was only a joke. But the damage was already done.
“It’s still good policy”
The reporter hit the president with a simple and valid question: Why do you choose “to wear a mask so often when you’re vaccinated and you’re around other people who are vaccinated?”
In his awkward, dad-like serious tone, Biden snapped back: “Because I’m worried about you.” After a moment of silence, Biden, who presumably realized that he’d overreacted to the reporter’s question, insisted that his reply was “a joke” before actually responding to the inquiry.
“Why am I wearing the mask? Because, when we’re inside, it’s still good policy to wear the mask. That’s why,” Biden said, according to the Post. “When I’m outside — and the problem is: Lots of times, I walk away from this podium, you notice, I forget to put my mask back on because I’m used to not wearing it outside.”
The remark from the president started out truthful enough, as Biden does seem to have trouble finding his mask — even when it’s in his own pocket — but it’s no secret that Biden is rarely seen even outdoors without a mask, aside from when he’s speaking at a podium.
The confusion continues
The president has taken a lot of flak for his mask-wearing practices and continued push for face coverings, especially after the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released new guidelines indicating that fully vaccinated Americans don’t need to wear masks outdoors, for the most part.
The situation worsened after Biden gave a presser outside announcing the new guidelines, but was still spotted wearing a mask before and after his talk with reporters.
After being pressed on why the president wore a mask outside after the CDC clearly said that he didn’t have to, the White House defended Biden’s propensity for mask-wearing, saying that it’s out of an abundance of caution, according to a separate report from the New York Post.
“You know, we do take some extra precautions for him because he is the President of the United States,” Anita Dunn, a senior adviser to Biden, said during a CNN interview.
Hopefully, Biden and his Democratic allies will soon wind down the mask-wearing theater and actually follow the science that they’ve preached about from the beginning of the pandemic. But I wouldn’t hold my breath.
