President Joe Biden has experienced a continued decline in his approval rating in recent weeks, in part due to his administration’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
That might be why he jokingly remarked that first lady Jill Biden, a career teacher, was “applying for a job” at a D.C.-area middle school.
“Educators answered the call”
Katie Rogers, the White House correspondent for The New York Times, caught the quip and shared it online in a tweet last week.

While the Bidens were at the school, they also touted the importance of COVID-19 vaccines for children.
As WJLA reported, Jill Biden opened up the event at Brookland Middle School on Sept. 10 with some prepared remarks and an introduction of student speaker Elijah Pool prior to the president’s address.
“When families needed help, educators answered the call,” the first lady said. “With all of my heart, thank you for being the heroes that we needed.”
“Fight the virus, not each other”
She went on to promise that the Biden administration would “partner” with the nation’s teachers in an effort to provide what students need.
“We owe them a promise to keep their schools open as safe as possible,” she said. “We owe them a commitment to follow the science. We owe them unity so that we can fight the virus, not each other.”
According to Jill Biden’s prescription, it will “take all of us students and families, educators and local leaders, cities and states, coming together to make this school year the best it can be.”
After she offered a glowing review of the school, her husband chimed in with a joke about her seeking employment. He went on to deliver remarks centered on vaccination and other mitigation measures meant to limit the spread of COVID-19.
He also used the forum to essentially dare his GOP detractors to challenge the federal vaccine mandate he introduced just one day earlier. Considering the decreasing popularity of his policies, it might not be a bad idea for his wife to submit her resume.
