Biden faces opposition from progressives over COVID-19 relief proposal: Report

President-elect Joe Biden is already facing unprecedented circumstances as he prepares to take over the White House on Jan. 20, given heightened security concerns in Washington in the wake of an attack on the Capitol building and continued allegations from some on the right that the 2020 election was rigged.

Now, according to Breitbart, Biden has another brewing problem — and it comes in the form of increasingly weary progressive Democrats who’ve already taken stabs at the 78-year-old incoming president over parts of his latest COVID-19 relief plan.

“$2,000 does not mean $1,400”

Over the past week, several members of the ultra-progressive “Squad” in the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives have publicly taken issue with the $1,400 direct stimulus payments that Biden wants as part of a new $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package.

“We will finish the job of getting a total of $2,000 in direct relief to people who need it the most,” Biden said last week, according to Breitbart. “$600 is simply not enough if you still have to choose between paying rent and putting food on the table.”

Not surprisingly, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) was one of the first “Squad” members to raise concerns with Biden’s idea that Americans should each be afforded a $1,400 check, which, in Biden’s eyes, would fulfill Democrats’ original promise of sending Americans $2,000, since a round of $600 checks went out starting last month.

But as Breitbart reported, Ocasio-Cortez recently made clear to a Washington Post reporter that $1,400 checks simply aren’t enough, saying, “$2,000 means $2,000. $2,000 does not mean $1,400.” She followed up in a tweet asserting that unemployment benefits should be “retroactive.”

More input from the “Squad”

Ocasio-Cortez wasn’t the only member of her progressive clique demanding that Biden up the ante, however.

As Breitbart noted, Reps. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) and Ilhan Omar (D-MN) both came out to insist that Americans receive a recurring monthly income to help offset a financial downturn due to loss of employment or their businesses, to the tune of some $2,000 per month.

Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) and the Squad’s newest member, Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO), both tweeted similar messages to Ocasio-Cortez’s, clarifying that $1,400 is less than $2,000, according to Breitbart, and suggesting that Biden has more work to do in order to satisfy their demands.

Leading up to the election, many speculated that the progressive wing of the House would eventually pose a challenge to Biden’s plans. Apparently, Biden’s troubles have already begun, even before he’s been officially handed the keys to the White House.
