Biden ends Monkeypox’s public health emergency status

The Biden administration is declaring the end of the monkeypox pandemic.

It is going to do so, according to CNBC, by allowing the monkeypox pandemic’s public health emergency status to expire.

“Given the low number of cases today, HHS does not expect that it needs to renew the emergency declaration when it ends on January 31, 2023,” Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra said on Friday.

The Biden administration declared monkeypox a public health emergency on Aug. 4. This followed a surge, which began in the spring, in the number of monkeypox cases worldwide.

July and August witnessed the worst monkeypox numbers with hundreds of new cases being reported every day. The highest single-day number of new cases was 638, and that occurred on Aug. 1.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) numbers indicate that some 30,000 Americans have been infected with the monkeypox virus since the start of the outbreak. 17 people have died from the illness.

In recent months, however, the number of per-day cases has been dropping off significantly. Now, fewer than 10 cases are being reported per day, compared to the 450 cases that were being reported per day in early August.

“We won’t take our foot off the gas”

It appears to be for this reason that the Biden administration is going to let the public health emergency status of the monkeypox virus expire.

Still, officials are warning that the end of the pandemic status does not mean that there is no longer any risk of contracting the illness. And, Becerra has made it clear that the Biden administration “won’t take [its] foot off the gas.”

“We will continue to monitor the case trends closely and encourage all at-risk individuals to get a free vaccine,” Becerra said.

A tale of two “pandemics”

Becerra and the Biden administration are now clearly trying to claim a victory here by saying such things as this: “From the outset of the mpox outbreak, the Administration pulled every lever to stop the spread of this virus.”

But, it has to be noted that, as the CDC and others have pointed out, this was largely a virus that spread among gay men. For this reason, there are many who have disputed whether or not this was a true pandemic.

Meanwhile, as the Daily Wire points out, the Biden administration refuses to lift the public health emergency status of the COVID-19 pandemic even though its numbers also have significantly dropped off.

Why the discrepancy? Could it be that the Biden administration is still trying to use COVID for political gains, whereas, at this point, the biggest political gain from the monkeypox pandemic will come from declaring victory over it? You be the judge.
