Along with the Democratic-aligned mainstream media, Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden has declared himself the victor of the election and has already begun to act as though he is the certified president-elect.
It was just two months ago, however, that Biden promised to refrain from claiming victory prior to any election results being officially certified, Breitbart reported.
Promised to wait
Fox News anchor Chris Wallace, the moderator of the first presidential debate in Cleveland, Ohio, had asked Biden during the debate, “Will you urge your supporters to stay calm while the vote is counted, and will you pledge not to declare victory until the election is independently certified?”
“Yes,” Biden said. “And here’s the deal. We’ll count the ballots. As you pointed out, some of these ballots in some states can’t even be opened until Election Day, and if there’s thousands of ballots, it’s going to take time to do it.”
Assuming the title
However, Biden ignored his promise, following the lead of the media that preemptively called the race for him — despite the fact that votes are still being counted, several states remain too close to call, recounts have been demanded, and litigation is pending.
On his Twitter account, Biden has already changed his bio to read “president-elect” and has posted a number of tweets outlining his transition efforts and administration’s agenda.
He even delivered what was unmistakably a “victory speech” Saturday in Wilmington, Delaware, wherein he opened with the line, “My fellow Americans, the people of this nation have spoken. They have delivered us a clear victory. A convincing victory.”
It’s not over yet
But, again, the actual result of the election has not yet been made official, as calls from the Associated Press, Fox News, and others have no constitutional or legal meaning.
No state has formalized its results or had them independently certified, no electors have been officially designated by state legislatures for the Electoral College, and the race remains far from over as finalized counts, recounts, independent audits, and court decisions could change everything.
What makes Biden’s presumption and broken promise perhaps all the more galling is that, in the lead up to the election, it was he and his allies in the media who had raged against the possibility that President Donald Trump would be the one to preemptively declare victory.
Now, with the media firmly on his side, it is Biden who has declared himself the victor even before all of the ballots have been counted or results certified.
It’s not difficult to imagine how Biden and the media would be reacting if it had indeed been President Trump who was acting as Biden is now.
