Biden’s 2022 budget eliminates longstanding Hyde Amendment, forcing taxpayer-funded abortion

President Joe Biden’s budget proposal that was released on Friday has the abortion industry celebrating.

A key aspect of Biden’s budget for fiscal year 2022 will result in American taxpayers funding abortions, Breitbart reported

Hyde Amendment

The budget plan includes the elimination of the longstanding Hyde Amendment.

The Hyde Amendment prevents, with limited exceptions, federal funds — i.e. taxpayer dollars — from being used in support of abortions. The exceptions are for pregnancies from rape or incest or for abortions needed to save the life of the mother.

The Hyde Amendment has been included in legislation every year since 1976 and has maintained bipartisan support — until now.

As Sen. Steve Daines (R-MT) explained, Biden’s budget “includes massive spending for Planned Parenthood and would completely strip the Hyde Amendment – the only thing stopping Democrats from forcing taxpayers to pay for abortions.” As noted by Breitbart, 58% of those surveyed in a Knights of Columbus/Marist poll released in January  oppose taxpayer funding of abortion.

Why the sudden change?

Biden’s decision to eliminate the Hyde Amendment in his latest budget plan is one more sign that his administration is abandoning the “centrist” persona he held during his presidential campaign and embracing the far-left progressives in his party.

In fact, Biden has supported the Hyde Amendment in the past as a U.S. senator. “Those of us who are opposed to abortion should not be compelled to pay for them,” Biden told a constituent in 1994.

The Biden administration has yet to explain why the Hyde Amendment was not included, but there has been a push recently, particularly among more radical Democrats, to eliminate both the Hyde Amendment and its counterpart, the Helms Amendment, which prevents taxpayer money from being used to fund or support abortions abroad.

Reactions

The billion-dollar abortion industry has already been celebrating the news of Biden’s radical budget proposal.

“Exciting to see the admin’s historic step! Planned Parenthood tweeted Friday. “For too long, the Hyde amendment has put the gov’t in control of personal health care decisions for people with low incomes. Your ZIP code, income, or health insurance should never determine the care you can access, incl. abortion.”

The pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List, however, accused the Biden administration of throwing a “bipartisan consensus out the window to fulfill a campaign promise to the radical abortion lobby.”
