Biden says he tries to avoid talking about protests, election security

Democratic White House hopeful Joe Biden said Friday that he will not talk widely about issues like election security or the violent unrest that has swept the nation in recent months because, in his words, he’d be “playing into” President Donald Trump’s hands.

According to the Daily Caller, those remarks came during a campaign stop for the former vice president in Delaware.

“I’m playing into — we’re playing, the more we talk about — there’s two things he wants us to talk about: ‘Is the election legitimate?’ and, ‘The whole country is up in flames. Everything is burning. Law and order,’” Biden said, according to the Daily Caller. “That’s why I try not to talk about it so much.

“Because he doesn’t want to talk about anything. Anything at all,” the Democrat added. “About the job he hasn’t done. And, so, it is — it’s a conundrum.”

“Rioting is not protesting”

Biden had been largely quiet about the nationwide unrest that first began in May following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis — that is, until the end of last month, when he finally condemned the violence following a police shooting in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

“Rioting is not protesting. Looting is not protesting. Setting fires is not protesting,” Biden said, according to CNBC. “It’s lawlessness, plain and simple.”

His remarks came as polls showed Biden’s lead over Trump narrowing, CNBC reported. It’s clear Biden is desperate to regain some traction — but is this enough?

Joe Biden’s America

According to the Trump campaign, the answer is a hard no.

“As predicted, Joe Biden today failed to condemn the left-wing mobs burning, looting, and terrorizing American cities,” the campaign’s communications director, Tim Murtaugh, said in a statement issued after Biden’s Delaware talk. “He failed to condemn Antifa. He failed to condemn people who called the police a ‘cancer’ or people on his campaign staff who called them ‘pigs.'”

While Biden may say it’s because he doesn’t want to egg Trump on, a far more likely scenario is that he can’t afford to lose young liberal voters who are backing the protests wholeheartedly.

“These left-wing rioters are Joe Biden supporters trashing cities run by Democrats who support his candidacy,” Murtaugh said Monday. “He has repeatedly given them cover by excusing their violence by calling them ‘peaceful protestors’ and accusing law enforcement of ‘stoking the fires of division.’”

Murtaugh added: “In truth, if you listen to Biden, it’s almost impossible to tell where his campaign ends and Antifa begins. You won’t be safe in Joe Biden’s America.”
