Former Vice President Joe Biden is reportedly set to announce a Cabinet pick that has even the mainstream media surprised.
Biden has selected Xavier Becerra, the Democratic attorney general of California, to be his secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), The New York Times reported Sunday.
“Mr. Becerra became Mr. Biden’s clear choice only over the past few days, according to people familiar with the transition’s deliberations, and was a surprise,” the Times stated.
Why is this a surprise? For two reasons: Becerra is an attorney, not a health expert, and, rather than HHS secretary, he was thought to be among those Biden was considering for the attorney general role.
Becerra has been California’s attorney general since 2017 when he took over for Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA). Before that, Becerra spent 12 terms in Congress representing Los Angeles, according to the Times.
During the past several decades, Becerra has become known for his far-left positions, particularly on health care and immigration. For example, Becerra is in favor of “Medicare for All,” although he reportedly will be content with Biden’s plan to strengthen the Affordable Care Act.
Over the past few years, Becerra has brought over 100 lawsuits against the administration of President Donald Trump. The lawsuits have mostly challenged Trump’s policies on immigration, health care, and the environment.
“He should be rejected”
Despite Becerra’s lack of health care experience, Rep. Filemon Vela (D-TX) argued that the California AG is a good pick for the HHS secretary position.
“Becerra will lead an agency that will play a crucial role in overseeing a massive immunization effort and help manage a bolstered federal response to tackle the worsening Covid-19 crisis,” he said, according to The New York Times. “He will also help shape the Biden administration’s efforts to build on the Affordable Care Act.”
Rep. Tom Cotton (R-AR), however, said that the far-left attorney is a disastrous pick.
“Xavier Becerra spent his career attacking pro-life Americans and tried to force crisis pregnancy centers to advertise abortions,” Cotton tweeted Sunday. “He’s been a disaster in California and he is unqualified to lead HHS. I’ll be voting no, and Becerra should be rejected by the Senate.”
Biden is expected to officially announce his selection of Becerra early this week.
