Biden administration takes action to curb deportations as border crisis continues

President Joe Biden has ordered Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to slow down deportations, arguing that immigration status alone shouldn’t be the reason migrants are forced out of the country, The Daily Wire reports.

The new guidance was reportedly issued by Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Thursday, and comes after months of illegal immigrants flooding across the southern border.

Unknown territory

The guidance from Mayorkas shifts the grounds for deportation from immigration status to public safety.

“The overriding question is whether the noncitizen poses a current threat to public safety,” a memo from the DHS secretary read.

The problem with the new guidance is that it assumes that border patrol agents and immigration courts can effectively determine if an individual migrant is a threat to public safety.

Migrants cross the border with little to no documentation, and law enforcement agencies have no ability to determine if they are who they say they are. That alone poses an immense risk to both public health and national security.

With an unprecedented surge in immigration at the U.S.–Mexico border, we are now in unknown territory — and instead of being cautious, the Biden White House is doing everything it can to make it easier for bad actors to slip through the cracks.

Ignoring concerns

Of course, Secretary Mayorkas is completely ignoring this concern.

“Whether a noncitizen poses a current threat to public safety is not to be determined according to bright lines or categories,” he said in his Thursday memo, according to The Daily Wire. “It instead requires an assessment of the individual and the totality of the facts and circumstances.”

Mayorkas also spoke with The Washington Post about the new plan, suggesting that the federal government has bigger fish to fry.

“Are we going to spend the time apprehending and removing the farmworker who is breaking his or her back to pick fruit that we all put on our tables?” the secretary pressed, according to The Daily Wire.

“Because if we pursue that individual, we will not be spending those same resources on somebody who does, in fact, threaten our safety,” he added to the Post. “And that is what this is about.”
