The Biden administration is being accused of hiding the truth regarding a troubling outbreak among immigrant minors in custody.
According to Fox News, whistleblowers say the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) instructed them to downplay a recent spike in COVID-19 cases among the detained children.
Infected minors “spread it to many employees”
The allegation was formally revealed in a complaint sent this week to government watchdog groups and congressional committees.
Two whistleblowers, Arthur Pearlstein and Lauren Reinhold, affirmed that they “served as volunteer detailees at the Fort Bliss Emergency Intake Site from April through June 2021.
According to the complaint from the Government Accountability Project, COVID-19 was “widespread” among migrant children who contracted the virus and “spread it to many employees.”
Pearlstein and Reinhold blamed “overcrowded conditions” and the lack of “adequate” protective equipment like facemasks for facilitating the spread. Masks were not “consistently provided” and their use was not “consistently enforced” at the facility, they claimed.
As their complaint concludes, the truth is not being told about places like Fort Bliss because the Biden administration is attempting to hide important details from the public.
“Deliberately kept under wraps”
The pair of whistleblowers described how HHS officials allegedly coerced employees to downplay or deny the COVID-19 outbreak.
They wrote that “regularly, when detailees reached the end of their term, a sheet was passed around with detailed instructions from the HHS Public Affairs Office on how, when asked, to make everything sound positive about the Fort Bliss experience and to play down anything negative.”
The complaint went on to assert that “every effort was made to downplay the degree of COVID infection at the site, and the size of the outbreak was deliberately kept under wraps.”
Of course, it is still unknown how widespread the problem actually is or whether the Biden administration has taken any steps to rectify the situation.
Recent reports have raised concerns about the virus being spread by undocumented immigrants, though such coverage has been largely eclipsed by the media’s focus on the risk posed by unvaccinated Americans. For his part, President Joe Biden is exerting his authority over federal employees as millions of skeptical citizens choose not to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.
