Speculation grows over Joy Behar’s future at ABC’s ‘The View’; previously said she’d leave show in summer 2022

Joy Behar, one of the more controversial liberal co-hosts of ABC’s “The View,” was strongly rumored to be on the verge of exiting that daytime talk show at some point this summer when her current contract with the broadcast network expired.

Those rumors were fueled in large part by Behar’s own comments in a book interview in 2020, in which she appeared to indicate that she planned to leave the show in the summer of 2022, the Conservative Brief reported.

Such a development would be huge, given that Behar is the sole remaining original co-host of the show that began in 1997.

Behar said in 2020 that she’d leave in 2022

It was in April 2020 that Variety reported exclusively on Behar’s own expressed intent to retire from “The View” in the summer of 2022, as revealed in a book written by a Variety reporter that purported to tell the “inside story” of the ladies who have hosted the program over the years.

“I have a three-year contract,” Behar said in an interview for the book. “But that doesn’t mean I can’t leave if I want to, because they can’t really do anything to me at this point. I don’t see myself staying for more [time]. That’s it!”

“I could be wrong. If I’m as fabulous in [2022] as I am now, I’ll think about it. But the chances of that happening …,” she added, “You know, time marches on. I’m not a kid.”

The Variety article went on to state that “multiple sources” had confirmed that Behar was planning to exit the show at the conclusion of her contract in 2022, though a spokesperson for ABC denied that to be the case in an official statement from the network.

Behar allegedly signed a new contract

However, according to the New York Post, those rumors based on Behar’s own words have apparently not come to pass, and a representative for the 79-year-old actress and TV host made it clear that she isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Behar’s rep told the Post that the rumors were “fake news” and announced that, rather than leave the show as she had initially insinuated she would, Behar has actually signed another three-year contract that will keep her on “The View” until 2025.

There were no details provided on the terms of the alleged new deal, but the Post noted that Behar was supposedly paid $7 million per year under the 2019 contract that expired this year and, odds are, her payments are even higher now.

No official confirmation yet

Of course, nothing has been officially announced as of yet by ABC or Behar herself about an alleged new contract, and there doesn’t appear to be any way to confirm or dismiss the Post’s account of what it was told by Behar’s representative.

That said, given Behar’s tendency to make controversial statements, which in turn garner more attention and ratings for “The View,” it wouldn’t be surprising if she does indeed stay on for a few more years instead of leaving this summer as she initially said that she would.
