Attorney General William Barr’s long-awaited appearance before the House Judiciary Committee took place on Tuesday, and fireworks went off all day long.
One of the key moments in the proceedings, however, was when Barr told Democrats that he would not halt the release of any report resulting from U.S. Attorney John Durham’s investigation of the Russia probe, even if it comes before the election, as the Washington Examiner reported.
Anxiety in the air
While no major names have yet been indicted as a result of ongoing investigations into the Russia collusion probe, the prospect is something on the minds of many Republicans.
Though some observers doubt that many high-level indictments are likely, a scathing report from Durham could do some significant damage to the Democrats in the run-up to Election Day.
An especially telling exchange with regard to Democratic anxiety about what Durham may reveal came when Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (D-FL) was on the clock during Tuesday’s hearing.
The congresswoman asked Barr, “Under oath, do you commit to not releasing any report by Mr. Durham before the November election?”
Barr responded, “No.” When the question was asked again, he stated, “No. I will be very careful.”
So much for the rule of law
Democrats love to talk about the rule of law until adherence to that principle jeopardizes their grip on power.
One would think that since Barr has already stated that neither President Donald Trump nor presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden are under investigation, members of Congress from both parties would want the truth to come out prior to November, for transparency’s sake if for no other reason.
While Biden may not be the direct subject of a criminal probe, if he played a role in unsavory Obama administration attempts to undermine the campaign and then the presidency of Trump, doesn’t the electorate have a right to know before casting their ballots?
The fact that Rep. Mucarsel-Powell even had the gall to ask such a question in a public hearing is amazing in itself, because it shows that even when in the public eye, they will do whatever it takes to protect Biden and the legacy of former President Barack Obama.
Biden has always maintained the Obama administration operated without the slightest whisper of a scandal, begging the question of exactly what Rep. Mucarsel-Powell and her colleagues on the left are so worried about.
