While many in the mainstream media have not been hesitant to openly criticize U.S. Attorney General William Barr, he has shown an increasing willingness to return the rhetorical attacks in recent weeks.
During an interview this week, the attorney general did not hold back, referring to much of the media as a “collection of liars.”
While generations of Americans largely had faith in the word of professional reporters, that trust has dropped precipitously in recent years — and for good reason, according to a growing number of Americans who see coverage as clearly biased.
It was this prevailing opinion that Barr addressed in his interview with Townhall on Friday.
“The press has dropped, in my view — and I’m talking about the national mainstream media — has dropped any pretense of professional objectivity and are political actors, highly partisan, who try to shape what they’re reporting to achieve a political purpose and support a political narrative that has nothing to do with the truth,” the attorney general said.
This troubling trend has been on full display, Barr argued, in the media’s reporting of nationwide protests over the past several months.
“They’re basically a collection of liars,” he said. “Most of the mainstream media. They’re a collection of liars and they know exactly what they’re doing.”
“Clear as day”
Barr went on to assert that “it was clear as day” to all observers — including reporters on the scene — that many demonstrations turned to rioting and violent destruction.
“It could not have escaped their attention that this was orchestrated violence by a hardened group of street fighting radicals, and they kept on excluding from their coverage all the video of this and reporting otherwise, and they were doing that for partisan reasons, and they were lying to the American people,” he said.
Of course, allegations of politically motivated news coverage are nothing new, with President Donald Trump frequently calling out the media over perceived partisan agendas.
A number of speakers during the Republican National Convention this month addressed similar views, including U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), who said the president portrayed at that event shows “the side of Donald Trump that the media will never show you.”
While there have been plenty of Trump allies who have denounced the mainstream media over the past four years, statements on the record from the attorney general are sure to resonate with even more Americans.
