Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden has cast himself as a transitional candidate for his party, which has opened him up to criticism from the left regarding concerns that he is insufficiently progressive on major issues.
Those concerns are sure to multiply in the wake of a new report by an unnamed Wall Street investment banker, who claims the former vice president sought to assure financial executives that he would restore and protect the status quo, as reported by Breitbart.
“This is just an exercise”
The banker’s alleged assurances came during private calls with wealthy donors concerned about the level of anti-capitalist rhetoric emanating from some Democratic Party circles.
The news doubtlessly infuriated many leftists calling for fundamental economic reform.
In a recent report by The Washington Post, the investment banker was granted anonymity to speak freely about what allegedly transpired on the private calls.
The source suggested that Biden basically told Wall Street to ignore what was being said in public by left-wing firebrands including Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Bernie Sanders (I-VT).
“They basically said, ‘Listen, this is just an exercise to keep the Warren people happy, and don’t read too much into it,'” the individual stated, according to Breitbart.
“Appears to be confused”
A number of other progressive proposals were also included in the discussion, the source said, and Biden similarly dismissed them as irrelevant to his campaign.
Among them, the Washington Post report claimed, were a guaranteed banking account for all Americans provided by the Federal Reserve and available banking services through the U.S. Postal Service. In response to the allegations, Biden campaign spokesman T.J. Ducklo disavowed the source’s claims.
“The Biden-Sanders task forces made recommendations to Vice President Biden and to the [Democratic] platform drafting committee,” Ducklo said. “This anonymous source appears to be confused and uninformed about this very basic distinction.”
Of course, that explanation simply plays into President Donald Trump’s narrative that Biden is a “hapless tool of the extreme left.”
On Election Day, it will be up to all voters to determine which version of Biden they believe would take the reins of the executive branch if he is elected.
