‘Discussions have ended’: Atlanta mayor to clear out protesting hotspot after series of deadly shootings

Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms (D) has quit negotiating with protesters.

According to a weekend report from Fox News, demonstrators will be forced to clear the area surrounding an Atlanta Wendy’s where a Black man was shot and killed last month after a series of deadly shootings there.

“Enough is enough”

Protests began nationwide following the death of 46-year-old George Floyd in the custody of Minneapolis police in late May. The demonstrations were still widespread when, according to New York Magazine, 27-year-old Rayshard Brooks was killed by Atlanta police officers after an altercation at a Wendy’s restaurant on June 12.

Sadly, the violence has only escalated from there. According to Fox, an 8-year-old girl was killed near the scene of Brooks’ death in one of at least a dozen shootings over the weekend there.

In response, Atlanta’s Democrat mayor is finally saying enough is enough.

“At the point that an 8-year-old baby is killed, the discussions have ended,” Bottoms said at a press conference Sunday, according to Fox.

She went on: “Enough is enough. If you want people to take us seriously and you don’t want us to lose this movement, we can’t lose each other.”

Tragedy after tragedy

Indeed, it is horrible to see any unnecessary loss of life, but the death of a child is particularly hard to accept.

The 8-year-old, later identified as Secoriea Turner, according to Fox, was riding with her mother and another adult when she needlessly lost her life. Fox cited a local reporter who said the 8-year-old “was shot as she and her mom tried parking in a liquor store lot.”

Unfortunately, Bottoms’ Sunday announcement that things would be changing didn’t bring an end to the violence. Within hours of the announcement by the mayor, three more people were shot, one fatally, at the same location, as Fox reported.

And until the left starts dealing with these problems head-on, the violence will only continue.
