The Daily Wire reports that Asa Hutchinson, the Republican governor of Arkansas, has recently vowed to do everything he can to ensure that former President Donald Trump is not the GOP’s presidential nominee in 2024.
Hutchinson said as much during a recent appearance on ABC News’s This Week.
“I’m going to do everything”
During that ABC News appearance, co-host Jonathan Karl asked Hutchinson whether or not he would be supporting Trump’s 2024 campaign.
“I’m going to do everything that we can to make sure there’s alternatives – that he is not the nominee. And, of course, that’s a – all depends upon who else is out there,” Hutchinson said.
“But, I do not believe that Donald Trump should be the next president of the United States,” he added.
Hutchinson, though, when pressed further on the matter, left open the possibility that he would support Trump in 2024 if there were no better alternatives, saying, “I want to see what the alternatives are.”
Hutchinson, then, reiterated that his primary goal is making sure the Republicans, in 2024, have an alternative presidential candidate to Trump. “That’s the first thing, and let’s figure out how to do that,” Hutchinson concluded.
If you are at all familiar with Hutchinson, then none of this will come as that much of a surprise.
Hutchinson is one of those individuals who has consistently condemned Trump with regard to the Capitol protest of Jan. 6, 2021. During his ABC News appearance, Hutchinson stated unambiguously that, “I think January 6th really disqualifies” Trump from holding office again in the future.
This is the same argument that is being made by many Democrats, particularly the Democrats on the House Jan. 6 committee. For example, Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD), a member of the committee, has argued that Trump is “constitutionally disqualified from holding office” under Section 3 of the Fourteenth Amendment.
Hutchinson, unlike the members of this committee, has stopped short of saying that Trump ought to be held criminally responsible for the events of Jan. 6, 2021.
But, Hutchinson has insisted that Trump is “politically” and “morally” responsible for it and that, therefore, he ought not to hold political office again.
So far, Trump is the only Republican who has announced his 2024 candidacy for the U.S. presidency. The big question is whether Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) is going to do the same, as polls have consistently indicated that DeSantis is Trump’s biggest 2024 Republican rival.
Hutchinson, himself, has also floated the possibility of a 2024 run. Polls, though, would suggest that he is lacking the support necessary to do so.
