Lawmakers in Arizona have turned on one of their own, condemning and mocking Rep. Stephanie Hamilton Stahl, a Democrat, after she was caught on video taking Bibles that has been placed in a room used privately by lawmakers and concealing them – under sofa cushions, in a refrigerator, and more.
"She doesn't 'place bibles,' she steals the Bibles from the House Member's Lobby and hides them around the building," charged Rep. Justin Heap.
The Arizona Daily Independent reported that some Republican lawmakers already were is discussions about censuring her for "disorderly conduct and theft."
Another lawmaker called the situation "weird and disturbing," and Sen. TJ Shope explained, "This is all just really bizarre guys. Like, I'm truly just flabbergasted here."
Pro-Tempore Speaker Travis Grantham explained the video shows someone "who’s got some purpose and some intent, and they know they’re doing something bad…For an ordained minister to do that, again, it’s nonsensical. I have no clarity as to why it happened."
Social media comments included:
"She's an ordained Democrat. That is her religion."
"Dems just can't stop stealing – bibles, elections, our freedoms, our tax dollars, unborn babies' lives, etc etc etc."
And "CRIMINAL theft charges need to be filed."
WND had reported this week on the situation where Bibles, in a members-only lounge in the Arizona House, disappeared multiple times, only to be found later by security officers under sofa cushions and in a refrigerator.
The room is set up for members to retreat to take a telephone call or meet with other members or staff between votes.
House security decided to set up a camera after the first episodes, when the Bibles vanished, but later were found "underneath cushions of two chairs."
A second incident resulted in them being found inside a refrigerator in a nearby kitchen.
Fox reported, "On April 10, when House members were in session, a third incident occurred, this time with the pair of Bibles in the lounge once again going missing from their locations. The security camera captured Rep. Stephanie Stahl-Hamilton, a Democrat and ordained Presbyterian minister, according to her bio, removing the books and hiding them under two sofas in the lounge."
The House member didn't respond to questions about the incidents, but later claimed she had "no problem" with the Bible and was joking about "separation of church and state."
House leaders said her comments made no sense.
