Kari Lake, the Republican candidate who is hoping to become the next governor of Arizona, is referring to herself as “Donald Trump with softer edges,” the Washington Examiner reports.
Lake, who does have the endorsement of the former president, has firmly aligned herself with Trump, pushing such things as border security and election security. But, she also believes that she can do something that Trump has struggled to do, namely get votes from “soccer moms” and the like.
“I am one of them,” Lake has said. “I am a mom, and I am tired of what I am seeing.”
Whatever she is doing, it does seem to be working.
Lake is in the lead
Currently, Lake is campaigning for Arizona’s Republican gubernatorial primary, which will be held on Aug. 2.
Lake’s top competitor is Karrin Taylor Robson, who has the endorsement of former Vice President Mike Pence, Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey (R), and many others. This has set up an interesting clash between Trump and his candidate, Lake, and the GOP and their candidate, Robson. The two sides faced off in campaign events that were held on Friday.
So far, Trump and Lake have been smashing the competition.
A recent poll has Lake leading Robson by double-digits. Lake came in at 43.1% compared to Robson’s 28.8%. No other candidate was in the ballpark, but it ought to be noted that 18% of those surveyed remained undecided, which is significant because Lake’s lead is by less than 18 percentage points.
The winner of Arizona’s Republican gubernatorial primary will face off against Katie Hobbs, the Democratic nominee and Arizona’s secretary of state, who is well-known for her anti-Trump vitriol.
Polls have pitted Lake against Hobbs, and at least one recent poll has Lake with a slight lead over Hobbs: 39.4% compared to 38.1%. That’s far too close to say anything definitive, and, on top of this, we still don’t know if Lake will be the GOP’s candidate.
Trump has made it clear that he believes Lake would be a good governor for Arizona. “Arizona finally has a chance to have a GREAT Governor,” Trump said last week. “Vote for Kari Lake — She has my Complete and Total Endorsement!”
Very soon we’ll see if Arizona voters agree.
