AOC on GOP mascot: ‘Honestly elephants deserve so much better’

Democrat New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez thinks the GOP should replace its party mascot.

The progressive congresswoman wrote in a tweet Monday that “elephants deserve so much better” than serving as the icon as the Republican Party.

Take a look for yourself:

Republicans’ 2020 platform

Ocasio-Cortez’s tweet came in response to criticsm of Republicans from Politico’s Blake Hounshell. Writing in a tweet Sunday, Hounshell alleged that the Republican National Committee (RNC) had announced that there would be no platform at its upcoming national convention, “just support for Trump’s second-term agenda, whatever that is.”

This comment from Hounshell came despite the fact that the reporter had linked in his own tweet to a recent resolution from Republicans that announced they’d decided to stick to their 2016 platform after the coronavirus pandemic forced them to “to forego the Convention Committee on Platform” in 2020.

The resolution added that “[t]he RNC enthusiastically supports President Trump and continues to reject the policy positions of the Obama–Biden Administration,” as it had in 2016, and that “the Republican Party has and will continue to enthusiastically support the President’s America-first agenda.”

With that, “the 2020 Republican National Convention will adjourn without adopting a new platform until the 2024 Republican National Convention,” the resolution concludes.

AOC’s “new mascot proposal”

Apparently, Republicans’ decision to stick to what worked in 2016 wasn’t a risky enough approach for progressives like Ocasio-Cortez, who doubled down in her response to Hounshell’s tweet with a “new mascot proposal” for the GOP — and for progressives like herself:

Of course, it’s not all that hard to believe that AOC would want to split from the more moderate members of her party considering her frequent squabbles with establishment Dems like House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). But the question remains: why does it matter which animal represents each party?

Perhaps Ocasio-Cortez just can’t find anything more pressing to worry about these days.
