Polls show Americans favor stricter voting laws

Polls continue to show that Americans are in favor of laws designed to protect the integrity of our elections.

The Daily Wire reports that one of the newest polls in this area found that an overwhelming majority of Americans indicated that they would be in favor of all kinds of stricter voting laws.

The poll was conducted by former Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway on behalf of the Republican National Committee (RNC). It was a phone survey that was conducted from June 8 to June 13.

Some 800 participants were asked whether they support different kinds of election integrity measures. 36 percent of those participants were independents, 31 percent were Democrats, and 29 percent were Republicans.

The numbers

First off, the pollster found that, at the moment, election integrity is a big issue for Americans. 63 percent of participants indicated that election integrity is within their top three issues, meaning that a political candidate’s position on voter integrity laws could be a pivotal part of a voter’s decision-making process.

In terms of the voter integrity laws themselves, the poll found that a majority of Americans support all kinds of such laws. 80 percent of participants, for example, expressed their belief that verifying a voter’s identification is an important voting security measure. 89 percent indicated that they are in favor of purging voter rolls after individuals have died or after individuals have changed their registered address.

78 percent of participants indicated that, besides stronger voter ID laws, they are in favor of signature verification, chain of custody controls, bipartisan observers overseeing counting, and cleaning up voter rolls.

87 percent of participants indicated that they are against ballot harvesting. 71 percent indicated that ballots ought not to be accepted after election day and 66 percent said that early ballots ought to be counted as soon as they are received.

53 percent of participants indicated that the sort of voting measures that were enacted as a result of the coronavirus pandemic ought to be scrapped.

This poll comes as Republican and Democratic politicians continue to fight about our country’s voting laws. Republicans have argued that, following the 2020 presidential election, voter integrity laws are needed to ensure fair elections and to restore faith in America’s elections. Accordingly, several Republican states have enacted voter integrity laws.

Democrats, on the other hand, have opposed these laws. They argue that voter integrity laws are nothing more than a means to suppress votes, particularly the votes of minorities, and they, accordingly, have been fighting these Republican-backed voter integrity laws and, instead, pushing to make permanent many of the changes that we saw in the 2020 election.

For what it’s worth, the poll found that 77 percent of Americans disagree with the Democrats’ claim that voter integrity laws somehow amount to racism. For that matter, the poll found that the majority of Americans simply disagree with Democrats about voter integrity laws in general, as the above results show. It looks like this might be another losing issue for the Democrats.
